Describing what can happen when one of the partners in a gay or lesbian relationship dies, Odhran Allen, Director of Mental Health at GLEN, said: "Often the relationship is not recognised, the loss is not recognised and the griever is not recognised. This has led to lifelong partners sitting at the back of the church, unacknowledged, unsupported and alone."
The IHF's Bereavement Services Manager, Dr Susan Delaney, added that: "The surviving partner in a same-sex relationship is not always give the care and support that might be afforded a widow or widower."
