PALLIATIVE CARE
FOR ALL PROGRAMME
Everyone with a life-limiting disease should have access to palliative interventions appropriate to their needs throughout the care pathway and to hospice care if required as their illness progresses.
Since 2006 IHF has sought to address equity issues in this area through a number of studies, projects and programmes. Please click on the links below for more information.

Education
The Extending Access Study examined the palliative care needs of people with life-limiting, non-malignant diseases. This joint study with the HSE focussed initially on the palliative care needs of people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, those with dementia and those with heart failure. Its findings are relevant to all life-limiting diseases. The Report of this Study "Palliative Care for All - Integrating Palliative Care into Disease Management Frameworks" was published in December 2008.

Palliative Care and Care of Older Persons
Older Persons Services continue to have a key role in the care of older persons as they near end of life. Developing clarity on the role of palliative care in disease management frameworks will further assist the end of life care of older people. The outcomes from the three action research projects in Dementia, Heart Failure and Advanced Respiratory Disease will inform developments in these areas and will link with Older Persons Services.

Education
The theme of the Moving Points Conference at Our Lady's Hospice, Dublin, held on 3rd and 4th March 2010 was "Crossing Boundaries: addressing the need to integrate palliative care in disease management." The conference was a collaboration between Our Lady's Hospice and the Irish Hospice Foundation and addressed some of the issues which arise in the Palliative Care for All report.
The Palliative Care Education Taskforce (PCET) made a submission to the HSE Education, Training and Research committee on the educational needs identified in the Palliative Care for All report. Click here to download this submission. Submission from PCET
The PCET has developed an education database which provides information about palliative care, end-of-life care and bereavement courses available in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
In October 2009 Northern Ireland Hospice held an all-Ireland International Conference - Pushing the Boundaries in Palliative Care and End of Life - which had a specific focus on palliative care for people with diseases other than cancer.
