The Green Graveyard company has been granted planning permission to open Ireland's first environmentally friendly graveyard on the slopes of the Blackstairs Mountains, about 12 miles from Enniscorthy. The first burials may be in October. |

The general public is unfamiliar with end-of-life care terms. This is among the findings of a study published in the Journal of Medical Ethics and funded by the Irish Hospice Foundation.
The authors (J. McCarthy/J.Weafer/M.Loughrey) say the study paints a picture of a general public that is not very comfortable with or informed about the processes of dying and death. Great sensitivity is required of health professionals who must negotiate the timing and the context of breaking bad news with patients and families.

Dr Anne Merriman, an Irish doctor, has said she never witnessed so much suffering as one her visit to Nairobi Hospice in 1989. Patients with advanced disease, severe pain and gross disfigurement were sent home from hospital to die with nothing stronger than a few paracetamol.

The IHF's annual programme of 'Lunch & Learn' seminars on managing grief at work will run from 3rd February to 16th March in 2010. Held in the IHF's city centre premises, the seminars run from 12.30-2.00 p.m., with a light lunch included.
